Cincinnati State hosts Disney scholarship events

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is partnering with the Walt Disney World College Program for a series of events Thursday, Oct. 14 and Friday, Oct. 15.

This project provides $1,000 scholarships toward tuition and books at Cincinnati State to students who successfully complete the Disney College Program, essentially a co-op experience at Walt Disney World.

Cincinnati State has a longstanding partnership with Walt Disney World. Scores of students from Cincinnati State’s culinary and hospitality programs, as well as other majors, have worked throughout the park and resorts at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, taking advantage of the unparalleled leadership and customer service training offered by Disney.

Students are compensated for their work and receive a stipend toward their housing costs, but most incur other expenses during their stay.

This week’s program has two broad themes, one involving corporate leadership training, the other the kitchens of the Midwest Culinary Institute. Some events are open to students, faculty and staff at Cincinnati State; some are fund-raising events to raise money for scholarships; some are geared toward corporate clients, including some sessions reserved for employees of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Participants include John Pepper, Chairman of the Board of the Walt Disney Company and the former Chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble; Lee Cockerell, who before his retirement served as Senior VP of Operations for Walt Disney World for a decade; Erin Wallace, the current Senior VP of Operations for Walt Disney World; and Jean-Robert de Cavel, Chef in Residence at the Midwest Culinary Institute.

  • Thursday, Oct. 14, 2-4 p.m. Professional Development Seminar – Conversations with Erin Wallace, Senior VP of Operations for Walt Disney World Resort. (This is a free event for students, faculty and staff.) ATLC Demo Studio 043
  • Thursday, Oct. 14, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Taste of Disney – Food and wine tasting using the recipes from Walt Disney World chefs featuring Disney College Program Chef Pauli Milotte. Summit Restaurant, 2nd Floor, ATLC
  • Friday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Campus Appreciation Picnic Lunch & Disney Character Photo Opportunity – Students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with a Disney character (the rumor is it’s one who likes cheese) from 11 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and again from noon-12:30 p.m. Other activities include making street signs and dog tags, caricatures, and face painting by an artist who worked at Disney.   • Friday, Oct. 15, 6-7 p.m. Black Tie Scholarship Dinner and Silent Auction – “An Enchanted Evening” hosted by Black Tie Mickey, Certified Master Chef John Kinsella and members of the World Master Chefs Society, Meg Galvin and Jim Myatt of the Midwest Culinary Institute and featuring celebrity chefs Jean-Robert de Cavel (Chef in Residence of the Midwest Culinary Institute and the proprietor of Jean Robert's Table) and Todd Kelly of Orchids Restaurant.
